In Whom Shall We Trust?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-8

God does not see as man sees. His vision is infinitely wider, higher, deeper than ours will ever be. We may have heard this before, but He sees our lives from outside of time and space – He sees the end of a thing before it even begins. So why would we not ask Him for His help, or believe that He will show us exactly what to do?

It’s easier to figure it out for ourselves. To work and rework the problem until we find our own answers. Our feet feel more sure when we are in control of our own lives, or own choices… small and finite as they are. But many of us know that the Lord will allow us to end up right in the middle of messes we cannot fix. And then He says to us, “Be still and know that I am God.”

He is slow in moving until He is not… then all His answers come suddenly, in a rushing wind.

Will we trust in Him?

Be not wise in your own eyes; FEAR THE LORD and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

Proverbs 3:7-8

Fear and anxiety are invited into our lives when we seek to understand how God is going to meet our needs, or how He is going to save us from some overwhelming circumstance. We can’t see the answer from where we are. We can’t figure out how He could possibly take care of the mess we are in. So we mull it over and over trying to find the answers. We work the problem again and again, suffering through long division that never adds up… so we work it again.

We have read it or heard it so many times in church, “So do not fear, for I am with you.” We have sat through all of the anti-anxiety sermons and had this truth drilled into our minds, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” And yet, when the mountain of our circumstance lands on our doorstep and we have the opportunity to remind ourselves of all we have been taught… we hit the panic button instead, and fear flattens our faith.

Believe me, I’ve been there many times. Maybe you have been, too.

But when the Bible says, “Do not lean on your own understanding,” it means, don’t try to figure it out… don’t try to figure Him out… just trust Him. For who can know the mind of the Lord until He decides to reveal His plans? Instead, if we will simply acknowledge Him in all we do…

“Thank You, Lord, that You see me in the midst of this battle, and You are my strong protector.”

“Thank You, Lord, that no matter what I see with my eyes, I know in my heart that You are with me and helping me, even now, and with Your help, I will slay this giant, in Jesus’ name.”

He is with us when we choose to face our fears. When we leave it all in His hands and choose to follow His leadership, He will take all those terrifying crooked corners and make them straight.

Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble in dread before them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not fail you or abandon you.
